Olive press in action

Olive press

I helped out even less with this weekend’s olive harvest, our second and final collection of this year, due to the bump – I’m 27 weeks pregnant already. Luckily we had another English family help Darren do the collection on Sunday and they also kindly came back yesterday to fold up all the nets – a time-consuming task that is no fun at all to do on your own.

My job was to look after the little ones who at 14 and 23 months were really too little to actually get involved. That’s not to say the harvest isn’t fun and interesting for such a small child, Mickey is definitely old enough now to understand the process. He probably already knows more about olive oil production than the majority of English people!

‘So they don’t have frantoi in England then?’ Paolo, the owner of our local frantoio (olive press), asked me this morning as the English people took photos of mundane pieces of machinery. I explained that we didn’t have olive trees, other than ornamental ones, so far north. He looked bemused and suggested that we pressed seeds instead.

We probably could do another collection after Christmas but we have decided that it’s not really worth it. We will already have enough oil for the year and with me out of action it is too much for Darren to do, there is already so much to be done as it is.

The rest of the olives will continue to fall to the ground until about mid January and feed their goodness back into the trees and next year’s fruit.
